Special Collections & Archives

Special Collections serves the research needs of UNCP students and faculty, as well as the wider community, by acquiring, preserving and providing access to books and archival materials that describe the history and culture of the University, the Lumbee Tribe, Southeastern American Indians, and Robeson County history. 

Finding aids are available online for searching the collection, which contains materials not included in the library’s general online catalog. A finding aid is a description of an archival collection, usually containing a history of the person or organization that produced the collection and an inventory of its contents.

Access to primary source information, including locating birth and death records, ship logs, and cemetery records.

Primary sources in digital collections of historical documents. A multi-disciplinary resource, collections cover a broad range of topics. This resource includes the following primary document resources: American Indian Correspondence: Presbyterian Historical Society Collection of Missionaries' Letters; Meriam Report on Indian Administration and the Survey of Conditions of the Indians in the U.S.; The American Indian Movement and Native American Radicalism; The Greensboro Massacre, 1979: Shootout between the American Nazis & the Communist Workers Party; The War Department and Indian Affairs, 1800-1824. Subjects: Middle Ages forward-from Witchcraft to World War II to twentieth-century political history. Particular strengths include: U.S. foreign policy; U.S. civil rights; global affairs and colonial studies.

Citations for books, essays, journal articles and government documents of the United States and Canada, pertaining to native North Americans, including culture, history and daily life. This resource is ideal for researching the contributions, struggles and issues surrounding North America's Indigenous peoples.

Includes an expansive archive of historical materials, primary sources, and government documents, consolidates the wealth of material available on indigenous American life and law, and shares the tremendous influence that indigenous peoples and their cultures have had on the development of the United States.

Native American Archives collection provides more than 1.8 million pages of original historical documents pertaining to Native American history and life from the 18th through the 20th century. The collection is made possible in collaboration with the National Archives and Allen County Library.

PAIS (Public Affairs Information Service) Index features two modules originating from printed index volumes: PAIS International and PAIS Archive. PAIS International database contains continually updated records for over half a million journal articles, books, government documents, statistical directories, grey literature, research reports, conference papers, web content, and more. Newspapers and newsletters are not indexed. PAIS Archive is a retrospective conversion of the PAIS Annual Cumulated Bulletin, volumes 1-62, published 1915-1976, and contains over 1.23 million records covering monographs, periodical articles, notes and announcements, and analytics with the original, historical subject headings retained.

The Robesonian, is available (via Access NewspaperARCHIVE) from 1872 to 2006. The Robesonian is fully searchable by keyword and date, making it easy for you to quickly explore historical content.

Newsbank offers The Robesonian (Lumberton, NC) from 2004 - 2022. Issues can be searched by date or keyword.

Dedicated to collecting, preserving, and providing access to primary sources that document the history of the visual arts in America. Holdings include more than 20 million letters, diaries and scrapbooks of artists, dealers, and collectors; manuscripts of critics and scholars; business and financial records of museums, galleries, schools, and associations; photographs of art world figures and events; sketches and sketchbooks; rare printed material; film, audio and video recordings; and the largest collection of oral histories anywhere on the subject of art.
