Mary Livermore Library offers access to a vast number of physical and electronic resources. However, sometimes the library doesn't buy access to that content. Instead we can borrow most books, articles, and occasionally, videos from other libraries. Typically there is no cost associated with an ILL request. If there is a cost, you will be notified and asked if you are willing to pay that cost before the item is ordered.
Mary Livermore Library offers access to a vast number of physical and electronic resources. However, sometimes the library doesn't buy access to that content. Instead we can borrow most books, articles, and occasionally, videos from other libraries. Typically there is no cost associated with an Interlibrary Loan (ILL) request. If there is a cost, you will be notified and asked if you are willing to pay that cost before the item is ordered. This video instructs users on how to use Interlibrary Loan.
Requesting materials from other libraries is called many things. You may hear it called document delivery, Interlibrary Loan, ILL, or ILLiad. All these names refer to the process where books, articles, and, occasionally, videos are requested from other libraries.
Step One: Create An Account
Click the Interlibrary Loan button above.
Click First Time Registration.
Fill out the application.
Once you have created your account, you can just log in the system.
Making a Request in Primo
When searching in Primo, patrons may discover physical materials that are lost or have been checked out for a extended period of time. Patrons may also find electronic resources that the library does not provide full-text availability online. Physical materials and most electronic resources can be requested through interlibrary loan.
First of all, make sure you are signed into Primo.
Next, locate the Interlibrary Loan link.
Making a Request in a Database
Some databases will have a link in a citation record that will say Request Item (see image below) while others may not have any links. This link may be located in different places in different databases. If there are no links, you will need to enter the citation information for the item you are requesting.
Click the link (if available). The ILLiad login screen will appear. Complete the login process. The request form will open with the citation information automatically filled in (see image below). If security screens appear, click I understand the risks and continue on until the interlibrary loan log in screen appears.
Make sure all required fields are filled out and submit request.
Making a Request When There is No Link
If no link to request the item exists in Primo or in the database, you will need to fill the citation information manually.
Find the Interlibrary Loan link on the website. Login to ILLiad.
Select the type of request you are making and fill in the citation information (see image below).
Enter the citation information on the correct form. Click Submit Request when finished.
Receiving Interlibrary Loan Requests
You will receive an email once your Interlibrary Loan requests arrive at the Library. It may take as long as two weeks for books to arrive; articles usually arrive in less than a week. The lending library will determine the length of time you may borrow books and microforms. The due date and other information will be placed on a label on your item. DO NOT remove this label. If you are a distance education student, physical items will be mailed first to UNCP and then on to the address the Library has on file. You will be responsible for returning them to the Mary Livermore Library and we will return them to the school that lent the items.
Most article requests will be sent electronically by other libraries. You will receive an email when the article arrives. To view the item, login to ILLiad and click on Electronically Received Articles (see image below). Articles will open as PDF files. You can print, save, or download the article. The article will only be available for 30 days on the interlibrary loan system. After 30 days it will be deleted by the system. If you fail to print, download, or save the item and need the item after 30 days, you will need to reorder the item.
