African American Literature Websites

The following is a list of websites on various African American literature sources. While some of the information from these websites is considered legitimate for academic purposes, the content should be thoroughly evaluated by the reader to detect inaccuracies, irrelevance, currency, and bias. Individual authors may have websites.

African American Mosiac (Library of Congress)
This online guide from the Library of Congress provides photographs, primary documents, as well as personal narratives. It is divided int four general subject areas: Colonization, Abolition, Migrations, and the WPA (Works Project Administration).
African Women's Bibliographic Database
Contains over 28,000 citations to materials published in English about African women. The database indexes six types of materials: books and government documents; articles appearing in edited books; periodical and journal articles; Masters theses and Ph.D. dissertations as well as a few B.A. theses and honors papers; conference papers; and videocassettes. Coverage is 1986 to the present.
Africana Periodical Literature
Indexes over 48,000 articles from over 280 English language and multi-lingual journals and periodicals that specialize in African Studies or consistently cover the African continent. Each title is indexed from its first day of publication to the present or, either its date of ceasing or a date where the journal or periodical no longer covered Africa on a regular basis. In only in a few cases were titles dropped due to the difficulty in obtaining copies or irregularities in the journal's publishing schedule. Of the over 280 journals and periodicals indexed, more than half have ceased being published. Until the mid-1960's few Africana journals were indexed in major indexing tools. This work hopes to fill the gap by indexing Africana materials from the mid-nineteenth century to today in one index. The titles indexed in this database represent Africana materials published in from over 22 nations within North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Documenting the American South (DocSouth) is a digital publishing initiative that provides Internet access to texts, images, and audio files related to Southern history, literature, and culture from the colonial period through the first decades of the 20th century. Currently DocSouth includes seven thematic collections of books, diaries, posters, artifacts, letters, oral history interviews, and songs.

Encyclopaedia Britannica Guide to Black History
This site "features 600 informative articles and is beautifully illustrated with historical film clips and audio recordings, as well as hundreds of photographs and other images. The related links and the bibliography provide excellent source material and areas for further study, as does the study guide for students, which is organized around six classroom activities, each with their own teacher recommendations, technical tips, and scholastic bibliographies."
Stanford University Martin Luther King Project
"The King Papers Project is a major research effort to assemble and disseminate historical information concerning Martin Luther King, Jr. and the social movements in which he participated." This site provides biographical materials, a chronology, an encyclopedia, as well as Martin Luther King's autobiography, papers, speeches and sermons.
Toward Racial Equality: Harper’s Weekly Reports on Black America, 1857-1874.
Harper’s Weekly was one of the leading periodical of it day. This collection brings together the material in Harper’s Weekly that deals with the plight of African Americans before, during, and after the Civil War. Reports, cartoons and drawings are included.
W.E.B.DuBois
"There are many interesting online pages with biographical details of W.E.B. Du Bois (1868-1963) and various aspects of his life, writings, and activities. Works by and about Shirley Graham, Du Bois's second wife, are also available on the Web."

Literature Sites

Bartleby
Provides access to many important reference sources, including the Columbia Encyclopedia, American Heritage Dictionary, Roget's Thesaurus, English usage sources, quotation collections, the Bible (Authorized Version), Shakespeare, and Gray's Anatomy. Providing electronic access to older classics and some copyrighted titles, Bartleby arranges English and American nonfiction, fiction, and verse (19th through early 20th centuries) into "anthologies" and "specific volumes." Online Books Page includes more than 12,000 titles, pointing the searcher to other online text sites, making its texts searchable by author, title, and subject.
VIRGO (formerly E-TEXT Center UVA)
"The Electronic Text Center (1992-2007), known to many as “Etext,” served the University community’s teaching and research needs in the areas of humanities text encoding for over fifteen years. Many of the resources once available on Etext are now available via VIRGO, the primary access point for all U.Va. Library digital texts and images."
Humanities Text Inititave
A group of collections covering all aspects of life. Making of America is one of the collections. Most major religious books can be found in this collection. Also in the collection is the Digital General Collection which consist of over 26000 books digitized for preservation issues at the University of Michigan.

Representative Poetry
This site provides a brief biography and a list of titles that can be viewed. A Glossary of poetic terms, Timeline and Calendar of births and deaths are also provided. Poems can be found by keyword searching. A Concordance search is also available to search out all use of a word in a poem.
Making of America
“Making of America (MoA) is a digital library of primary sources in American social history from the antebellum period through reconstruction. The collection is particularly strong in the subject areas of education, psychology, American history, sociology, religion, and science and technology. The collection currently contains approximately 8,500 books and 50,000 journal articles with 19th century imprints.”
